Former Dunfermline midfielder Ryan Flynn has criticized St Mirren for their recent performance and subsequent draw. In a statement made on the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast, Flynn expressed his thoughts on how St Mirren, who are the current holders of the League Cup, have been 'punished' following their loss to Dunfermline in the group stage.
St Mirren had an impressive record in the group stage, winning all three matches against Dumbarton, Cove Rangers, and East Kilbride. However, they suffered a setback when Chris Kane converted a late penalty during their match with Dunfermline on Sunday. Despite finishing top of the group on goal difference, St Mirren’s nine points were insufficient to secure seeding for the last 16 draw.
The outcome meant that instead of facing easier opponents like Celtic or Rangers later in the competition, St Mirren will have to navigate a tough tie against Rangers early in the season. Flynn elaborated on this situation, stating, 'You always think you’re going to face them [Rangers or Celtic] at some point but I think you’d rather face them in the final and get some easier draws along the way.'
Flynn also highlighted St Mirren manager Craig McLeish’s frustration after their game against Dunfermline. McLeish had previously spoken about his team's goal of achieving 12 points, securing four wins, and potentially being seeded to avoid a difficult draw. However, these efforts did not pay off as St Mirren failed to meet the required criteria.
Flynn concluded by emphasizing how this tough draw against Rangers is a significant challenge for St Mirren, especially considering it comes early in the season: 'It’s a very, very difficult tie so early in the season for them to try and remain holders of the League Cup.'
