Dunfermline Athletic's dominance in their Championship clash with Ayr United counted for little as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Somerset Park. The result leaves the Pars sixth in the table with 13 points from eight games, their recent form reading DLWWD.
Josh Cooper put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, but the lead lasted just six minutes. Kevin Holt equalised for Ayr United, converting from an Ethan Walker free-kick to secure a share of the points.
Dunfermline’s missed chances
Despite the final score, the statistics told a story of one-way traffic. Dunfermline registered 24 efforts at goal compared to Ayr's seven. Rory Macleod had an early chance, Olamilekan Adams saw a curling shot saved and later fired wide, and substitute Keith Bray was denied point-blank by Ayr goalkeeper Harry Stone. Allan Oyirwoth also went close after controlling a pass from Cooper.
Neil Lennon, the Dunfermline manager, did not hide his feelings after the final whistle. "I'm really angry," Lennon said. "Look, it's a magnificent performance."
The team had fielded an unchanged starting lineup from their victory at Greenock Morton three weeks earlier, though they were without six players away on international duty, including Dylan Lobban, Sam Cleall-Harding and Andrew Tod.
Ayr’s resilient defence
Ayr United’s point was built on a resolute defensive display, with goalkeeper Harry Stone named man of the match for his series of saves. Stone praised his defenders after the game. "It was backs to the wall again like last week," the goalkeeper said, referencing a similar performance against Livingston. "My defenders were brilliant and always there to block shots."
The draw means Dunfermline have taken eight points from their last five matches. They now turn their attention to a home fixture against fourth-placed Livingston on Saturday, 17 October. Fans can check the details of that match and the rest of the schedule on our fixtures page. The team will be looking to convert their creative dominance into a victory that could lift them in a tight Championship standings.
