Dunfermline Athletic secured their spot in the last 16 of the League Cup after a thrilling match against St Mirren. The visitors needed a win to pip Championship rivals Queen's Park as one of the three best runners-up in the group stage. It looked like they would fall short until Keith Bray was knocked over by Marcus Fraser inside the penalty box and striker Chris Kane slotted the spot kick home. St Mirren, who still finished top of Group D on goal difference, were unfortunate not to take the lead after 24 minutes. Former West Bromwich Albion striker Eseosa Sule went into a challenge with goalkeeper Aston Oxborough and fellow summer arrival, Samuel Ramos, slotted home the loose ball. However, referee Sean Murdoch decided that Sule had fouled Oxborough rather than the other way about. While the Premiership side were seeing more of the ball, it was Dunfermline who created the better chances, with Alfons Amade and Zak Rudden forcing fingertip saves from Jacob Chapman. Rudden had a shot cleared off the line and Josh Cooper fired wide, but Kane's penalty won it for Neil Lennon's side. Dunfermline currently sit 4th in the Championship, with 51 points from 36 games, and are 26 points behind leaders St Johnstone. They have scored 52 goals and conceded 41 this season, with a recent form of 0W-2D-3L.
